How to Calculate Your TNEB Bill

Your electricity bill is calculated based on the difference between your current and previous meter readings. This gives you the total units (kWh) consumed during the billing period.

Step 1: Note your previous meter reading from your last electricity bill.

Step 2: Note your current meter reading from the meter.

Step 3: Subtract the previous reading from the current reading. The result is your total consumption in kWh (kilowatt-hours).

Step 4: The consumption is then applied to the applicable slab structure. Tamil Nadu uses a telescopic billing system where different rates apply to different consumption ranges.

If your total bi-monthly consumption is 500 units or less, you receive 200 units free. If your consumption exceeds 500 units, you receive only 100 units free, and higher slab rates apply.

TNEB Domestic Electricity Slabs

Tamil Nadu follows a telescopic slab-based billing system for domestic electricity consumers (category LT-IA). This means each slab rate applies only to the units falling within that specific range, not to your entire consumption.

The state government provides subsidies to reduce the effective tariff payable by consumers. The rates shown in this calculator reflect the tariff payable after government subsidy.

How is TNEB electricity consumption calculated?
Your electricity consumption is calculated by subtracting the previous meter reading from the current meter reading. The result gives you the total kilowatt-hours (kWh) consumed during the billing period. For example, if your previous reading was 1,250 and current reading is 1,650, your consumption is 400 kWh.
Why does my bill change significantly after 500 units?
The 500-unit threshold is a critical boundary in Tamil Nadu's domestic tariff. If your bi-monthly consumption is 500 units or less, you receive 200 units free under the government subsidy scheme. However, if your consumption exceeds 500 units — even by a single unit — you lose the 200-unit free benefit and only receive 100 free units. Additionally, higher slab rates apply for consumption above 500 units. This is why the bill can increase significantly at the 501-unit mark.
Is TNEB billing monthly or bi-monthly?
Domestic electricity billing in Tamil Nadu is bi-monthly — bills are issued every two months. The slab rates and free unit thresholds are based on the total consumption during this two-month period. This calculator is designed for bi-monthly consumption.
What does kWh mean?
kWh stands for kilowatt-hour. It is a unit of energy commonly used for electricity billing. One kWh means using 1,000 watts of power for one hour. For example, a 100-watt bulb running for 10 hours consumes 1 kWh. Your electricity meter records consumption in kWh.
